You can plug the cable into the earphones and keep them topped off even when on the go. The pouch is a nice, sturdy square of canvas that contains a rectangular, rechargeable battery with a short micro USB cable that just barely peeks out of it, with enough space left to easily hold the coiled earphones. That makes a total of nearly 20 hours of listening before you need to plug them in (though that number will vary depending on your volume levels).

Plantronics says the earphones will last up to 6.5 hours on a charge, and the battery pouch can provide two full charges at a time.

The $129.99 package includes a combination portable battery and carrying pouch. The earphones can handle light rain and sweat, but they aren't designed with working out in mind. The largest size of the eartips kept the earphones in place, but a few different sizes of loops would have been nice. Unfortunately, the BackBeat GO 3 only comes with one size of loops pre-installed on the earphones, and they were a bit too small to stay seated in my ears. The earphones have rubber loops designed to press against the inside of your ear and ensure a secure fit, a now common feature on earphones without some form of external support besides the cable. Second, the plastic mounts are color-coded by size, so you can easily keep the different pairs together. First, they connect to the earphones with small plastic mounts that easily and securely click into place rather than with rubber that must be stretched and positioned properly. The eartips have two very welcome elements not often seen on earphones. Plantronics includes three pairs of silicone eartips in different sizes. Since 1982, PCMag has tested and rated thousands of products to help you make better buying decisions. ( See how we test everything we review (Opens in a new window).) The center button can also activate your phone's voice assistant with a long press (around three seconds holding the button down longer powers off the earphones). The remote is fairly standard: The center button controls power, playback, and calls, and the other two buttons control volume with a short press and track navigation with a long press. An in-line microphone and three-button remote sit a few inches down the cable from the right earpiece. The right earpiece holds the micro USB port for charging, hidden behind the colored cap along with an indicator light that glows red when plugged in. Each earpiece holds an eartip, pointed at a slight downward angle rather than perpendicular with the rest of the earpiece. The earphones are available in gray with copper-colored caps on the ears, or black with dark gray or dark blue caps. The BackBeat GO 3 ($29.99 at Amazon) (Opens in a new window) is fairly similar to the previous BackBeat GO pairs in design.

With strong contenders like the JBL Reflect Mini BT ($69.95 at Amazon) (Opens in a new window) and the Skullcandy XTfree ($54.99 at Amazon) (Opens in a new window) available for the same price, the BackBeat GO 3 just isn't as appealing as the previous version was a few years ago. The BackBeat GO 3 shares a similar sound signature with its predecessor, and at $99.99 (or $129.99 with battery pouch), costs $20 more than the BackBeat GO 2 did at launch. We really liked the BackBeat GO 2 at the time, despite its somewhat weak bass, but the wireless headphone field has moved forward. Plantronics' latest pair of Bluetooth earphones, the BackBeat GO 3, is an upgraded version of the Editors' Choice BackBeat GO 2 ($28.99 at Amazon) (Opens in a new window) from 2013.
